The Iliad by Homer is a classic I recently came into contact with. This amusing story contains the components of mythology; human heroes who, at a historical moment, come into contact with the divine; in this case, the gods of Olympus.
Like a good mythology, it teaches us and tells us stories at different levels. The first is the historical one, in which the Achaeans seek to take siege of Troy as revenge for the abduction of Helen, considered the most beautiful woman and wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. Clearly, this is the romantic motive for the incursion, but it goes hand in hand with many other political and power interests.
At a deeper level is the story that speaks to us, humans, and the forces that govern us; the things we are capable of and the virtues that can lead us to success. At this level, we understand ourselves and our instincts.
Despite being a story older than that of Christ, it is extremely entertaining, rich in details, and easy to read. It's easy to identify with its characters and motives, making it a very enjoyable read for an afternoon and a coffee.
